Black Generation Settings in ICC Creation

If you're creating a new ICC profile (Devices > Print Mode Manager, select Create ICC), here's some additional information about getting the best output value for black.

Black Generation settings (GCR value, Black Start, and Black Width) and Max Ink are important for secondary color gradients into black.

The default settings on the Black Generation tab reflect this importance.

Let's compare Black Generation settings as related to Max Ink.

Lower Max Ink

Desired Max Ink 200
GCR Amount 70
Black Start 10
Black Width 100

If you have a low Max Ink (which may even be the calculated value), then you will need to use a high black generation (GCR= 70, Black Start= 10 and Black Width= 100) to get enough ink for the black to be a good black.

Higher Max Ink

Desired Max Ink 260
GCR Amount 30
Black Start 30
Black Width 70

If you can use a higher Max Ink (without bleed issues), then you can use less black (GCR= 30, Black Start= 30 and Black Width= 70), otherwise the ink may pool and reflect, which makes the black look less black.

The main advantage of using less black is overall better print quality.Using less black means the output is less grainy (especially on printers without Light black),
