Connecting Cutters and Plotters to SignLab

If your cutter or plotter is connected by a Serial or Parallel port, or if you are unsure what connection to use, watch the following video:

USB -> USB Connection

All devices connected with a standard USB cable require a USB Port driver from the manufacturer.

If you do not install these drivers, the plotter will not work from any software.

In-app plotter drivers are installed either during the initial software installation or from File > Install > Cutting devices.

Graphtec Plotters

Before installing drivers for your plotter, check that there is a USB Port driver available from Graphtec that is compatible with your operating system.

You can check and download from here: Graphtec Cutting Plotters

If there is no driver for your plotter and operating system combination, you will need to find an alternative connection solution.

Once you have installed the correct driver for your plotter in SignLab, you should go to Cut > Plotting Defaults > Setup > Port.

The port to select is:

  • Graphtec{Model}_USB001+
  • External Dll
  • Fiery Graphtec USB

An “Error Opening Output Pipe” when you try to plot means the cutter is not connected or the Graphtec USB port does not exist and the USB port drivers still need to be installed.

Summa Plotters

Check that there is a USB Port driver installed from Summa.

You can check and download from here: Vinyl Cutter Downloads

The file needed is USB Cutter driver.

The driver you install from SignLab must have USB included in the name.

Once you have installed the driver for your plotter in SignLab, you should go to Cut > Plotting Defaults > Setup > Port.

The port to select is:

  • External DLL

An “Error Opening Output Pipe” when you try to plot means the cutter is not connected or the Summa USB port does not exist and the USB port drivers still need to be installed.

Roland Plotters

Before installing drivers for your plotter in-app, check that there is a USB Port driver available from Roland that is compatible with your operating system.

You can check and download from here: Cutting

If there is no driver for your plotter and operating System combination, you will need to find an alternative connection solution.

Once you have installed the correct driver for your plotter in SignLab, you should go to Cut > Plotting Defaults > Setup > Port.

The port to select here is :

  • Roland{Model}_USB001+

If you do not see the port Roland{model}_USB001+ or similar then the USB port drivers are not installed or the cutter is not connected.

Mimaki Plotters

Before installing drivers for your plotter in SignLab, check that there is a USB Port driver available from Mimaki that is compatible with your operating system and plotter.

You can check and download from here: Cutting Plotter

The file needed will be Mimaki Driver.

Once you have installed the correct driver for your plotter in SignLab, you should go to Cut > Plotting Defaults > Setup > Port.

The port to select here is External Dll or Fiery Mimaki USB.

If a connection to the cutter is found, the cutter name will change to CG-FX-00 or similar. If this does not happen, no connection is made.

Other Plotters

Some manufacturers (Mutoh, GCC, and many others) use a Standard USB cable, but when connected to the PC and Plotter, a Virtual Serial Port is created in Windows.

Once you have installed the correct driver for your plotter in SignLab, you should go to Cut > Plotting Defaults > Setup > Port.

The port to select with these cutters is usually named something like USB => Serial (ComX). You might also see UnknownPrinter_USB001+ or similar.
